Review of Once Burned by Samantha Hunter
A Sophie Turner Mystery
5 stars
A riveting paranormal mystery, “Once Burned” caught my
attention and interest from the very beginning and never let go. Juggling a mix
of contemporary suspense, crime, romance, and family issues with a very
engrossing thread from the 19th century, interweaving it all with
factual Boston history and modern society, this novel starts out strong and
ends with a true cliffhanger conclusion, making this reviewer want to go back
and pick up the first mystery in the series, as well as eagerly awaiting the
next installment. Although “Once Burned” functions as a stand-alone, it does
reference the earlier mystery, and of course, readers will want to race ahead
to the next, as soon as available. These are characters whom I found it easy to
empathise with and like, and there is a plethora of paranormal elements to
enjoy, from ghosts and meditation to Tarot reading and unbreakable code books,
plus mysterious shadowy figures (now you see ‘em, now you don’t) and plenty of
good old-fashioned human greed, avarice, and cruelty. Author Samantha Hunter is
a prolific and well-accomplished writer. I can’t wait for the next mystery in
the Sophie Turner series.
